Deanery Events and Formation

The Deanery has a successful record of organising a wide range of formation and training events for catechists working in the Lewisham Deanery.

The rolling programme covers the following areas:

·         Sacramental Preparation for Baptism;

·         Eucharist and Reconciliation;

·         Confirmation;

·         Support for catechists working with Children's Liturgy; and  

·         Support for catechists involved in RCIA.

In addition training and support are offered for the following Ministries:

·         Youth ministry,

·         Special Ministers,

·         those visiting the housebound; and

·         Readers.

This event has been planned to support all those who currently read at Mass and any new or prospective readers.

It will also provide an insight into the personal spiritual development this ministry offers.

1-Day of Recollection for Special Ministers Downham 21st October 2017

Fr Doug Bull, the Dean of Lewisham Deanery, welcomed over 80 Special Ministers from parishes across Lewisham Deanery to the Day of Recollection at Good Shepherd Parish Downham on Saturday 21st October. Fr Doug introduced Deacon Amgad Gerges who was recently ordained for Forest Hill Parish.

82 Special Ministers enjoyed a very informative and practical session led by Deacon Amgad, his own professional knowledge and experience in the field of Hematology gave his presentation added impact. The final part of the day was spent in prayer. Deacon Amgad gave Benediction to those present accompanied by some vibrant singing.

Once again we are grateful to Canon John Kavanagh and the parishioners of Good Shepherd Downham for hosting the day and also for their hospitality and welcome.

2-Day of Recollection for Catechists St Andrew’s Convent Belmont Hill Saturday 1st July 2017 10.30am and a closing liturgy at 3.00pm

This event has been booked and will be facilitated by the Sisters of St Andrew.

3-Day for Readers 25th February 2017 at SWOY Forest Hill 10.30-12.30pm


8th October 2016 Day of Recollection for Special Ministers                                                      Good Shepherd Parish Downham 10am-12.30pm

Over 80 Special Ministers attended this Day of Recollection for  Special Ministers, hosted by Downham Parish.Fr Tom Creagh-Fuller introduced Deacon Javier Elderfield who led the day and encouraged the special Ministers to reflect on "Cultivating a Eucharistic Spirituality" by means of a talk, group discussions, and feed back.The session concluded with Eucharistic adoration and Benediction in the Church.  The Day was a great success and Special Ministers greatly appreciated the excellent presentation from Deacon Javier. The Deanery is grateful to Canon John Cavanagh and the Parishioners of Downham for hosting this event once again.
